Tips From Expert Brene Brown on Learning from Our Mistakes

When we make a mistake, we may feel a range of emotions — embarrassment, frustration, anger, disappointment, and more.

However, how we handle those mistakes and move forward can make a profound impact — for better or worse.

Expert researcher Brené Brown shared one powerful tip for moving through mistakes when speaking on her podcast “Unlocking Us."

“The core of mental toughness is actually self-compassion,” Brown shared.

Brown emphasized that mental toughness means rather than slipping into "self-criticism or self-loathing," compassion allows us to move forward.

And while some of us may naturally be tough on ourselves — whether it's something we've developed as our own practice or it's because of how we were treated when we made mistakes when we were younger — research shared by Standford shows that self-criticism actually can make us "insecure, anxious, and self-critical, which adds to our misery."

Criticism can hinder our ability to reach our goals and may make us feel defeated.

Instead, giving ourselves grace, as Brown says, can help us take a more relaxed approach and move forward.

How To Practice Patience

Whether you're stuck in traffic or waiting for an important update work, it can be challenging to practice patience.

However, it's a valuable skill that can help us feel more at peace as we move through the day.

Here are a few tips to practice patience, regardless of where you are or what the specific situation is:

  • Tap into mindfulness: Instead of stressing about the outcome, try to focus on the present moment. Observe the world around you and engage your five senses.

  • Try gratitude: This may feel like the last thing you want to do —and even if you're not grateful for whatever you're waiting on (who wants to sit in traffic?) — it can be helpful to think of a few other things you are grateful for. Think of your pets, loving friends and family, beautiful weather, and other things you enjoy!

  • Remind yourself it's not forever: While being patient can be difficult in the moment, it can be helpful to remind yourself that it's not forever.

  • Validate yourself, and make peace with what you can't control: Sometimes, waiting just plain stinks. Especially if it's something stressful. Allow yourself to acknowledge that, and at the same time, remind yourself that you can't control the situation. This can help you feel a little less overwhelmed.

$47 Million in Artwork Sales Equals Profits for These Everyday Investors

Masterworks is taking on the billionaires at their own game, buying up paintings by world-class artists like Banksy and Picasso, and securitizing them for its investors.

When Masterworks sells a painting – like the 16 it's already sold – investors reap their portion of the net proceeds. Its investors have already received proceeds from more than $47 million in sales, realizing annualized net returns of 17.8%, 21.5%, 35% and more.

Now, Masterworks wants to do the same thing for you. By qualifying every offering with the SEC, Masterworks makes it easy for everyday people to invest in multi-million dollar paintings. Offerings can sell out in just minutes, but as a trusted partner, Note To Self readers can skip the waitlist to join here.

How To Do Self-Care When You Feel Like You Don't Have Time

Sometimes, life gets so busy that we feel like we don't have a spare second to do some intentional self-care.

It can be easy to put self-care on the back burner. However, it impacts all areas of our lives, so it's critical to still integrate it and keep it a priority where we can.

Luckily, you don't need to set aside hours just for self-care. Here are a few ways you can integrate it when you feel like you don't have the time:

  • Be mindful during your regular routine: Simply being present as you go through the non-negotiables in your self-care routine — like brushing your teeth, showering, getting dressed, and eating — can make it feel much more impactful.

  • Add in things where you can: Incorporating mindful adjustments or additions to your existing routine is an easy way to keep it a priority. Maybe that means doing a face mask after the rest of your skincare routine while you scroll your phone before bed or putting on a podcast you've been wanting to start while you fold laundry.

  • Set aside time when you can, and make it a priority: Even if it's just 30 minutes or an hour a week, block out time in your calendar when you can focus on yourself and do something you want to do. This can make you much more likely not to push it aside for other tasks.

  • Consider outsourcing so you can focus on yourself: Is there someone else you can turn to so you can make a little more time for yourself? Maybe once a week, you and a friend can swap nights cooking for one another so you have a little more time. Or maybe you're in a position where you decide you can hire someone to help keep the house or lawn tidy. Remind yourself that you don't have to do it all, and it's okay to ask for help!
