Discover Alternate Sports to Explore Movement and Your Self-Interests

When we think of "sports," our minds often jump to activities like football, basketball, soccer, and so forth.

However, those aren't the only sports! In fact, there are many activities, often dubbed "alternative sports," that challenge the definition of what many of us traditionally think of sports to be.

These sports may also be intertwined with different lifestyles and subcultures, which can make them even more excited to dive into!

If you're interested in exploring alternative sports, a few that we enjoy include:

  • Skateboarding

  • Archery

  • Paintball

  • Surfing

  • Disc Golf

  • Pickleball

  • Hula hoop

  • Jump roping

5 Lessons We Can Learn From Skateboarding

Skateboarding is so much more than a fun activity to enjoy the outdoors — the culture and lessons surrounding it can teach us so much, too!

Here are 5 lessons we can learn from this activity:

  1. Finding a sense of community: Skateboarding offers a welcoming place for people to form family-like bonds and enjoy a shared love for the activity, which is a powerful approach we can take to other areas of our lives!

  2. People are not defined by disabilities: Adaptive skateboarding has empowered people from all walks of life to enjoy this sport and serves as a powerful reminder that people are not defined by disabilities!

  3. We can express ourselves in everything we do: As Rodney Mullen said in a TED talk, creativity and self-expression can come alive in everything we do — whether that's through a board on wheels, in a craft we love, or something else!

  4. Falling and getting back helps us get better: Skateboarders often learn "how to fall" before they learn tricks, as it teaches them to be safe when they take a spill. This is an incredible lesson we can take away: Failure is not the end. In fact, it may be the first step to doing what we aim for!

  5. We can find enjoyment in others' achievements: Skateboarders are known for celebrating their competitors' victories. While it can be tough to lose, this teaches us that we can also appreciate others' talents and successes!

Tips From an Olympian on Overcoming Fear

Fear can weigh heavily on us. It can keep us from doing the things we want to do and love — and it may cause us to act in ways that feel unfamiliar.

However, even people who are the most experienced and, from the outside, seem like they have nothing to be afraid of, experience fear. After all, it's what makes us human. We all go through these unique challenges and experiences.

However, how we approach fear can also have a tremendous impact on how we overcome it.

This week, we've loved watching an inspiring TED talk from Olympian Allyson Felix on overcoming fear.

Felix, who is the most decorated track and field athlete in history, holds 11 Olympic Games medals and 20 World Championship medals, shared that while she was growing her family, she lived in fear that people would discover she was pregnant.

Felix explained that, like in many professions, being pregnant as an athlete may not be viewed as a positive. For many female track and field athletes, becoming pregnant has been dubbed the "kiss of death," Felix explained. It may come at a loss of pay in contracts and other deals.

However, instead of letting fear take the reins, Felix advocated for herself — and others — to work to change the way companies approach these contracts.

We're inspired by Felix's approach to fear and how we can move through it!
