What Exactly Is the Mind-Body Connection?

Our minds (and brains) do so many things for us — like helping us breathe, controlling our reactions when we touch something hot, and much, much more.

However, these involuntary functions aren't the only things our minds do for us. We have a powerful mind-body connection that can influence the way we think, feel, and move through the world.

As shared by Florida Medical Clinic, "The mind-body connection is the link between a person’s thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors and their physical health."

For example, when we feel stressed about something, our body may respond by sweating and making our heart beat faster.

However, other practices — like engaging in movement, journaling, and taking a shower — can positively impact our minds and help us relax.

In short, the mind-body connection is all about how our mind and thoughts influence our bodies and how the things we do with our bodies influence our minds and mental well-being!

Ideas To Improve Your Mind-Body Connection

Developing and improving your mind-body connection can be a lifelong practice — but it doesn't have to be overwhelming!

There are small, mindful ways you can strengthen this connection every day.

Here are a few places to start:

  1. Tap into mindfulness: Whether you're washing the dishes, on a walk, or at work, think about the present moment and move through your five senses as you experience it!

  2. Do a full-body scan: Slowly move from your head to your toes, or vice versa, and examine how each part feels. Try to relax each muscle group and body part as you do the scan.

  3. Check in with yourself: Think about hunger cues, how you feel physically, emotionally, and so forth.

  4. Try a practice that encourages mind-body connection, like yoga or tai chi: These often encourage you to actively engage with your body and pause your thoughts.
