Creative Ways To Incorporate More Fruits and Vegetables Into Your Meals

Fruits and veggies pack lots of important micronutrients that support our health! However, they might not always be a priority in our day.

We’ve got a few simple ways you can add more fruits and veggies into your day:

  • Add a side: Try adding a side of fruit or vegetables to your meal, or have one as a snack!

  • Incorporate it into a dish: If you’re making pasta, can you add some spinach or peas? Maybe there’s a way you could incorporate a pureed sauce with some tomato.

  • Reach for soup: This is prime soup season! Many soups incorporate produce, and you can even add your own selection.

  • Pre-cut fruits and veggies: When we pre-cut fruits and vegetables, we may be more likely to reach for them and incorporate them into our day. Try cutting up a few days’ worth of produce so you have a good selection on hand, but it still stays fresh.

  • Hide it: Instead of making produce the star of the show, can you hide some sliced fruit or veggies in a muffin or smoothie?

Fall Gardening Ideas To Set Yourself Up for Success In the Spring

Spring is often what we think of as peak gardening season. However, the fall season is the perfect time to help set the stage for success when next year rolls around!

First, bring in any plants that need to live indoors in the cold months. You might have done this already, but if you haven’t, be sure to do this before it gets too cold outside.

It’s also a good idea to tidy up. Remove any annual plants and clean out anything dead — just be sure to compost! Be sure to rake your leaves (if you have any) to help keep your space neat and easier to manage come spring.

This is also the perfect time to cut back perennials to prevent slug damage come spring.

While fall may not seem like a good time to plant anything, it can actually be a great time to plant bulbs that bloom in the spring, like tulips.

If you live in a more mild climate, you can also plant root crops, including beets, carrots, and so forth.

Discover Budget-Friendly Produce

Especially if you’re trying hard to be budget-conscious, you may want to be strategic in how you grocery shop. Fruits and vegetables often get a reputation for being expensive — and while they certainly may not be as cheap as some other food options, there are definitely still ways to be frugal and incorporate them into your diet!

In addition to being more affordable than some other alternatives, you can also often buy many of these items in bulk, which helps cut down on costs.

  • Bananas

  • Potatoes

  • Apples

  • Carrots

  • Peas

  • Green beans

  • Cucumbers

  • Onions

  • Celery

  • Melons (while this may seem more expensive when you break it down per serving, you can get a lot of bang for your buck).

Another great overall tip is to shop seasonally. Seasonal produce not only generally tastes better but will also usually be more affordable as it wasn’t shipped as far and is sourced more locally!

Bonus tip: don’t be afraid to explore canned, fresh, and frozen options to compare and see what’s most affordable.
