Are Air Purifiers Necessary?

While we may only think of pollution being outside our homes, experts say we can have it indoors, too.

Some indoor pollutants may include:

  • Chemicals from cleaners, furnishings, and some paints

  • Mold

  • Smoke

  • Vapors

  • And more

Not to mention, things like pollen and wildfire smoke can also enter our homes if we leave the windows open.

This leads many people to ask the question: Is an air purifier necessary?

Luckily, HVAC systems already circulate and filter the air, which gets rid of some of the pollutants you want to avoid.

However, in order to do so, your HVAC needs to be running all of the time — which might be a problem if temperatures are moderate. It's also important to change the filter every 30 to 90 days, depending on your system — which some people may not keep track of, or their landlord may not make it a priority.

Even with an HVAC system, without testing, it’s hard to say whether or not you could benefit from an air purifier.

You can purchase an air quality home test to determine what contaminants are in your home. From there, you can decide if you want to invest in an air purifier.

Rather than do a test, some people prefer the peace of mind of having an air purifier to help remove any pollution or allergens indoors. They can be a great addition for people who have asthma, allergies, respiratory problems, or pets.

It can also be a good investment if you live in a big city that likely has higher pollution levels and you open your windows on occasion.

Small Environmental Things That Can Damage Our Hearing

As we go through our day, we encounter many different noises in the world around us, from the sounds of traffic to the songs of nature.

However, everyday activities and things we encounter could be damaging our hearing without us even noticing! That's why it's important to take caution and protect our hearing whenever possible.

Some things you might not think twice about that could cause some damage include:

  • Going to the movies: Movie theaters can get very loud, at around 74 and 104 decibels. Try renting a movie at home to control the volume and protect your ears.

  • Going to bars and restaurants: Bars and restaurants can reach harmful sound levels as well. If you have to shout to hear the person next to you, it’s probably too loud. Ask staff to turn down excessively loud background music in restaurants or opt for places with spacious outdoor seating where you can escape some of the noise.

  • Blow drying your hair: You might be used to the noise of your blow dryer, but your ears aren’t. Earplugs are a safe and easy option to protect your hearing when styling your hair.

  • Making a smoothie: Similar to blowdryers, blenders can get extremely loud. The solution is the same: Pop in some earplugs before blending your fruit.

  • Smoking: One sneaky culprit that can affect your hearing is smoking. The chemicals in tobacco can be toxic to your ears. The best way to protect your ears and overall health is to quit smoking.

  • Jobs: Whether it's your job or someone else's, the noise from things like construction, dentistry tools, and more can cause lots of noise that can damage our hearing. Especially if you're in these environments for long periods, opt for ear protection!

While many daily factors can lead to hearing damage, there are simple solutions! Your best bet is to be proactive and take precautions to protect your hearing.

Discover the Core 4 Organizing Method

You may be familiar with the saying: a cluttered space is a cluttered mind. As straightforward as it sounds, sometimes cleaning just doesn’t sound fun. The Core 4 Organizing Method uses four simple pillars to declutter and get organized.

Kayleen Kelly created the method to take the stress out of cleaning up. The four C’s of the Core 4 are:

  • Clear Out

  • Categorize

  • Cut Out

  • Contain

Before you start, you’ll need:

  • Trash bags

  • Sticky notes or labels

  • Markers

  • Bins or boxes

  • Tissue paper or bubble wrap

Begin by clearing everything out of the space you want to organize. If your goal is to tackle your closet, completely empty it

Once everything is pulled out of the space you’re organizing, create categories for your items. In the case of your closet, you could make a pile for shoes, bags, belts, tops, etc. You can keep track of categories by using sticky notes or grouping similar items in bins.

Take inventory of everything you’re categorizing. If you don’t love it or use it, it’s time to ditch it.

Next in the Core 4 method, organize the items you want to cut out by putting them in bags for donation or the trash.

Finally, use bins and containers to store what you want to keep.

This method simple, easy-to-follow method can help make decluttering a little less daunting!
