How to Build More Professional Relationships
Networking can be an important part of our professional careers.
However, it may not come naturally to all of us. It can feel inorganic, uncomfortable, awkward, and everything in between.
But professional relationships aren’t just for working your way up the ranks in a company. They can also be super helpful for collaboration, strengthening your skills, becoming more knowledgeable about your job, company, and industry, and so much more.
If you’re looking to build more professional relationships, a great way to start is to spark a conversation — and follow up with another one later. Relationships aren’t built off a single interaction — they’re created from multiple, repeated ones.
In these interactions, stay curious and interested in the other person. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. However, also remember to offer value. This will help maintain interest and show you’re not only interested in the relationship for your own benefit.
After a few interactions, you can offer a larger one — like a coffee, a meeting, or something similar. This is a great stepping stone from a casual work acquaintance into a professional relationship.
Above all, remember to be yourself. This will make it much easier than trying to fit a mold that’s not genuinely to you!
How to Get Out of a Conversation You Don’t Want to Be a Part of
Most of us have gotten stuck in a conversation that we don’t want to be a part of — and it can be painful.
You don’t want to be rude to the other person, but sometimes, they just aren’t taking the hint.
Boundaries are important, and our time is valuable, so you shouldn’t have to stay in a conversation if you’re uncomfortable, have other things to do, or simply don’t want to engage in it.
Here are some ideas to get out of a conversation without being rude:
Find a pause — or create one: Wait for a natural break, or use words like “anyway,” “alright,” “well,” and “anyhow” to suggest a wrap-up.
Come up with an excuse: Whether it’s getting back to work because you’re on a deadline, heading to the bathroom, or saying you don’t want to keep them, this can help transition out of the conversation.
Use a sandwich: If it feels too blunt to use an excuse on its own, you can “sandwich” your exit between compliments and niceties. For example, “I enjoyed catching up with you! I should really get back to work. Good luck with that report!”
This can be challenging at first, but with practice, will get more natural over time.

Ideas to Inspire Confidence in Yourself and Others
Confidence can inspire us to move through the world with more self-assurance and live authentically.
However, telling yourself to “just be confident” isn’t the most effective way to spark it in yourself (or someone else).
That’s why we love this TED talk with some ideas from educator and activist Packnett Cunningham.
Cunningham shares three keys to unlocking confidence with ourselves and others: permission, community, and curiosity. Together, she says these can work together to help us be more self-assured in who we are and what we do.
