How to Have a Safe and Fun Fourth of July

Fourth of July is one of the best weekends of the year, and a little preparation goes a long way toward keeping it that way. Whether you're grilling, heading to the water, or watching fireworks, here's what to keep in mind.

Fireworks cause over 19,000 fires each year in the U.S. Only light them on dry, open ground, never relight a dud, and always have water nearby. Sparklers burn hot enough to cause serious injuries, so glow sticks or confetti poppers are a safer swap for little ones.

If you're grilling, keep the grill at least two feet from anything flammable and check gas hoses for cracks before you fire it up. Near water, make sure there are enough life preservers for every passenger before anyone gets on a boat.

For kids and pets, the heat and noise are the biggest concerns. Dress kids in light, loose clothing, reapply sunscreen every two hours, and watch for signs of overheating. As for your pets, the safest place for them is home with familiar surroundings and somewhere quiet to ride out the noise.

The Real Reason We Love Watching Fireworks

There's a reason you can watch fireworks year after year and still feel that same rush of excitement. It turns out your brain is doing a lot of work in those moments, and most of it feels really good.

Visually, our brains are wired to respond to bright, contrasting colors and dynamic movement, the same evolutionary instinct that draws us to flowers or ripe fruit. Add in the boom and crackle, and the brain's fight-or-flight response kicks in just enough to release adrenaline without any actual danger. The combination of sound and light creates a multisensory experience that's genuinely hard to look away from.

Then there's the dopamine. Watching something awe-inspiring triggers the brain's feel-good chemical, which is why fireworks feel less like something you watch and more like something you feel.

A big part of the magic is also who you're with. Shared experiences amplify positive emotions, and fireworks have a way of pulling a crowd into the same moment at the same time. Add in the nostalgia of past celebrations, the music, and the fleeting nature of each burst, and it's basically a formula for joy. No wonder we keep showing up for them.

Your Guide to a Perfect Fourth of July Staycation

Staying home for the Fourth doesn't have to feel like settling. With the right setup, it can honestly be the most fun version of the holiday.

Start with the vibe. String up some lights, grab a cooler full of your favorite drinks, and put on a playlist that feels like summer. Set up outside if you can, even if it's just a few chairs and a citronella candle. The goal is to make it feel like an occasion, not just another Friday night at home.

From there, lean into the classics. Fire up the grill, make something you actually look forward to eating, and go all in on the dessert. Red, white, and blue anything counts. If you're skipping the fireworks show, find a good spot to watch neighborhood ones from your yard or a nearby park, or pull up a backyard movie and call it a night.

The best Fourth of July memories rarely come from the fanciest plans. They come from good food, cold drinks, and the people you're with. This year, home might be exactly the right place to be.

You Can’t Scale If You’re Still Doing Everything

BELAY created the free resource From Operator to Owner to show leaders how to step out of the day-to-day without losing control and what it takes to operate at the next level.

At BELAY, we match you with U.S.-based Assistants who take on the operational work that’s keeping you stuck.
