The Benefits of Reframing Obligations as Opportunities

Many of us have been in a place where we dread doing something — whether it’s going to work, a social obligation, or something else.

However, shifting our mindset from thinking of these obligations as opportunities can make them something we look forward to — or at the least, don’t dread.

An example of this could be:

  • Instead of thinking: “I have to go to work today.”

  • You could reframe this to: “Going to work today will be an opportunity to feel connected to something bigger and get some social interaction with my coworkers.”

Or

  • Instead of thinking: “I have to clean the house.”

  • You could reframe this to: “Tidying up will make me feel at peace, and I’ll feel much more relaxed in my environment.”

This shift can make us more excited and help us see a different side of things. It can also make us look forward to these things instead of dreading them. Plus, it can give us a motivation boost!

It’s important not to completely flip to a mindset of toxic positivity, where you deny and ignore your feelings. Be sure that even as you reframe your experiences, you still validate your feelings.

How to Make Your Morning or Evening Commute a Time of Self-Care

Commuting can be a dreaded time of day for many people. It may feel like time wasted as we sit in traffic or on public transportation. However, it doesn’t have to be!

Going to and from work can actually be a great time to practice self-care. Here are a few of our favorite ways to do it:

  1. Practice mindfulness: Notice the sights and sounds around you. This is a great way to stay engaged and active.

  2. Find a way to engage in something you enjoy: Listen to music, put on an audiobook, and do something you love that doesn’t require you to use your hands (unless your commute involves public transit)!

  3. Make it a time for social self-care: Call family or friends — just be sure if you’re behind the wheel, you’re still engaged, using a hands-free calling mode, and being safe!

  4. Use it as a time to decompress or disconnect from the work day: Create separation between work and home, and lean into this as a time to get your mind in a different state.

Regardless if you drive, take public transportation, bike, or walk, your commute can be a great time for self-care! Just be sure you’re being safe and aware of your surroundings while doing it.

What We’re Watching: How 5 Minutes of Self-Care Can Help Us Avoid Burnout

When we feel like the last thing we have is time, it’s easy to put self-care on the back burner. We may think that unless we have a significant chunk of time to dedicate to self-care, it can’t happen.

However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Even just a few minutes of self-care can help us stay grounded and centered and avoid burnout.

We’ve loved watching a TEDx Talk on how even 5 minutes of self-care can help us navigate burnout.

Expert Racquel Armstrong shared her personal experience with using self-care as a powerful tool to move through difficult times — including a cancer diagnosis — and how it’s something we have to prioritize.

While burnout is definitely not something we can manage long-term, self-care can be transformative in helping us navigate those feelings in the short term.

Some of our favorite times to incorporate a few minutes of self-care include:

  • In the morning, after we get ready for the day

  • During a break at work — whether it’s at lunch, in the afternoon, or whenever we can step away from our work for a few minutes

  • When we get home in the evening

  • Before bed, after we’ve done our nighttime routines

Watch the TEDx Talk here and discover the power of short bursts of self-care to promote well-being.
