When Wellness Starts Making You Sick
Wellness used to mean feeling good. Now it often means tracking, timing, and optimizing every part of your day, from your protein intake to your morning sunlight. Certified holistic nutritionist Nicole Bendayan calls this “the wellness gender gap,” where women, in particular, are pushing their bodies so hard in the name of balance that they end up more stressed and less healthy.
Overdoing it can quietly show up as fatigue, irregular cycles, and mood swings. Bendayan says she’s seeing more women lose their periods altogether because they’re under-eating, over-exercising, and over-stimulating their nervous systems. The result: higher cortisol, disrupted hormones, and bodies that can’t keep up with all the “self-improvement.”
Even trends like intermittent fasting, cold plunges, and keto diets can backfire when applied without nuance. Research shows most studies are based on men, meaning women’s hormonal systems aren’t always accounted for. Shorter cold plunges, gentler fasting windows, and more carbohydrates can make a world of difference. The real goal isn’t perfection. It’s health that feels sustainable.

Sunset of the Day
Shared by Note To Self reader Mike, this sunset washed the sky over Mamaroneck, New York, in shades of deep orange and pink. The light cut through the rooftops and trees, turning an ordinary evening into something quietly striking.
It’s a good reminder that beauty doesn’t always need a big view. Sometimes it’s waiting just outside your window.
Have a sunset or sunrise worth sharing? Tell us where it’s from and what makes it special. We’d love to see it.

How to Stay Active When It’s Cold Outside
When the temperature drops, it’s tempting to swap your daily walk for a blanket and hot drink. But staying active in winter can help boost your mood, strengthen your immune system, and keep energy levels steady through darker months. Many people move less in cold weather, but the chill can actually make your workouts more effective if you’re prepared.
Start by warming up indoors for 5–10 minutes to get blood flowing and muscles loose. When heading outside, think in layers: a moisture-wicking base, a heat-trapping mid-layer, and a weatherproof shell to block wind or snow. Don’t skip hydration or carbs either. Your body burns more energy and water trying to stay warm than you might realize.
If the cold feels uninviting, try alternatives like yoga, swimming, or guided at-home workouts. For outdoor types, winter hiking, skating, or cross-country skiing are great ways to move while enjoying the season. The key is simple: bundle up, pace yourself, and let movement be the thing that keeps you warm.
